About Us
The history of the Mooresville Fire Department dates to February 1877, when the Mooresville Board of Trustees established the town’s first organized fire service by authorizing the appointment of a Fire Warden. This role was responsible for conducting fire inspections and coordinating firefighting efforts throughout the community.
By 1905, the town took a major step forward in fire protection with the installation of water mains and fire hydrants by the Indianapolis Power & Water Company. At the same time, Mooresville purchased three hand-pulled hose carts and formed an early fire brigade. These carts, equipped with hose lines that connected directly to hydrants, played a critical role in protecting the growing town. One of these original hose carts is still preserved by the department today.
In 1923, Mooresville transitioned into the modern era of firefighting with the purchase of its first motorized fire engine, a Graham Brothers Hale pumper built on a Dodge truck chassis. Fully equipped with hoses, nozzles, and essential firefighting tools, this apparatus marked a significant advancement in the department’s capabilities.
Over the decades, the department continued to grow and evolve, adding new equipment to better serve the community. Notable additions included a 1952 FWD Waterous pumper and a 1955 Ford Darley pumper, followed by a series of newer pumpers in 1974, 1985, and 1993, some of which remain in service today.
In the early 1980s, the department expanded its aerial capabilities with the purchase of a used 1952 American LaFrance 75-foot aerial truck. Due to its condition, it was retired and sold in 1991. It was replaced in 1994 with a modern 100-foot Pierce Arrow aerial platform equipped with a Waterous pump, further enhancing the department’s ability to respond to complex emergencies.
Today, the Mooresville Fire Department continues to build on this strong foundation—honoring its history while embracing modern technology and training to serve and protect the community.
